WPHS Tennis

By Bonny Matejowsky and Olivia Varan

Everybody has heard that you can’t have your cake and eat it too, but Mason Bui (12) and Felipe Frot (12) are proof that you can. The two friends get to practice and play tennis together, but also use the sport to their advantage off the court. The spirit of this sport impacts its players all year round, even though the tennis season at Winter Park officially starts in January.

Mason first started his tennis journey 9 years ago. While he started playing before becoming an official member of the IB programme, Mason believes that tennis has made him a better IB student. “Tennis teaches adaptability,” he says, a trait that is important to any good student. “If there is anything IB has taught me, you need more than academia to feel whole,” Mason states, “and tennis really stretches me.” The duality of the student is a huge objective in IB, one that Mason seems to have mastered.

Of course, the traits of any good sportsman are applicable outside of school. Felipe, who has been playing for 8 years, claims that tennis has helped him in many ways even outside of IB. “One thing all tennis players have to learn is patience. Patience is always important,” he says. Felipe also uses tennis as a method for relaxation, a “welcome distraction from the rigor of IB.” Sounds like something we could all use!

With many public tennis courts located around our town, there are options for players at every level. Whether you are looking for a fun way to earn Active Hours or simply want to enjoy some Spring weather, look no further. Tennis may be the perfect sport for you!
